Surfing England UK SUP Surf Championships Results 2022

The Surfing England UK National SUP Surf Championships took place over the last weekend in June and competition was fierce given this was a qualification event for the top SUP surfers to compete in the ISA World Games later this year.

Press Release: Surfing England

A last minute venue call turned out to be just the ticket for Surfing England’s inaugural SUP Surfing Championships, with the natural amphitheatre that is Newquay’s Great Western Beach delivering a solid 4 – 5ft in stiff offshore conditions.  The scene was set for a SUP Surfing masterclass.

The crew gathered early for an 08:00 check in with the swell already showing a clean 4ft and building, there was a classic mix of excitement tinged with a few nerves on the beach as heat draws and running orders were inspected and the first rashies of the day pulled on.

After a safety brief from our head judge and an intro into the judging criteria and format for the day the competition got underway with the Men’s open heats.   We got to see a real variety of surfing style with the best mixing up little step back pivots keeping them in critical position on the wave face and then classic big hits off lip and snaps throwing heaps of spray.  Standout through the heats was Dave Ewer laying down one of the highest scoring combinations of the day.  Running straight through to the men’s semi finals we then got to see the country’s best women SUPers hit the waves and some of the most closely contested surfing of the day.  Annabel Page, a name you need to keep an eye for the future, smashed her first heat with the highest Women’s score of the day and some exceptional surfing.

In the juniors we were straight to finals with Annabel Page and Storm Ewer going paddle to paddle with Annabel taking the junior crown.

In the Men’s finals Nick Graham came up trumps and took top spot, with John Hiscock taking second just 0.09 ahead of Marcio Dias in third.

The Women’s final was no less of a tight battle with Christina Doviak taking first place, with second spot going to the now familiar name Annabel Page with Emily Earp just 0.2 behind in third.

It was a phenomenal day of surfing.  The SUP crew brought huge excitement and much comradery to the beach, not to mention some radical performances in the water.  The results from the day will be used to inform Team England selection, so look out for more SUP surfing news coming your way.

A huge thanks must be extended to all those that made the event possible.  Surfing England isn’t funded by government, so it’s only through our sponsors and much goodwill across the surfing community these events happen.  Big shout out to Adam Griffiths at NQY Surf School who look after Great Western Beach and gave us access at massively short notice when the forecast changed dramatically with 24hr to go!  Huge thanks to our sponsors: dryrobe, Caravan and Motorhome Club, Decathon, Wild West Jerky, Korev and Cutty Sark Whisky.

Finally to all the event crew that made it possible – photography and videography, judges, beach marshal, ERA water safety and Tina our fabulous competition director.
