Monthly Round-up of SUP / April 2023

Welcome to our collection of the biggest news and stories that have taken place in the SUP world from the previous month. Let's recap what happened in April 2023.

Longboard SUP Revolution - Bali Event - Recap

The Longboard SUP Revolution Bali Cosmic Experience event was held from the 7-10th April, 2023 in Bali, Indonesia. This event is solely a longboard SUP competition with boards needing to be over 9ft in length with a longboard shape. The LSR is a movement that started in Australia with a mission to promote and add a 10ft SUP longboard division to all SUP competitions throughout the country and now they have taken the initiative to Bali to showcase the best longboard SUP surfers in the world on the best waves. The event consisted of four divisions which included the Weekend Warrior and Elite categories for both men and women. The LSR Bali Cosmic Experience attracted over 50 competitors from around the world.

Beau Nixon travelled to Bali, Indonesia to compete and has done a full recap from the event. Link above. Beau brings you a recap where you’ll learn about the event and watch all the longboard SUP action from finals day.

SUP Twelve - 12 Hour SUP Event

The inaugural SUP endurance event, SUP Twelve, took place on the 1st April in the UK.  The anticipated event was a huge success. Brendon Prince is the man behind this SUP endurance event which saw competitors complete as many laps as they could over a 3.5km course within 12 hours. Starting at 7am on the 1st April, 2023, paddlers were greeted with windy and challenging conditions but that didn’t deter the 27 strong field as they all took to the water for charity and the chance to become the first winner of SUP Twelve.

Fox Butler went hard and fast on the very first lap to secure the fastest lap time of 17:14. Fox went on to finish the 12 hour event in 3rd place. 2nd position was PJ Simmons and coming in 1st was Bruce Smith who smashed out 30 laps. The top female competitor was Emily Evans who finished 5th overall after completing 25 laps.

APP World Tour 2023 - Alicante Sprints - Season Opener

The first stop of the 2023 APP World Racing Tour did not disappoint as intense competition leads to the crowning of APP originals, Connor Baxter and Fiona Wylde, as champions.

Connor Baxter claimed the first sprint title of the 2023 season in the same place he was crowned world champion in 2022. Baxter executed the perfect game plan from start to finish, making him undeniably the best sprinter in the world at present. New Caledonia’s Noic Garioud claimed second place after proving to be a fierce competitor throughout, not giving Connor chance to breathe in the final. It was Japan’s Shuri ‘Shrimpy’ Araki who claimed third, with his compatriot and favourite for today’s race, Rai Taguchi, being knocked out in the repecharge in a huge upset for the impressive Japanese racer.

On the women’s side, it was Fiona Wylde who took the top spot in an incredible comeback after an 18-month hiatus from racing due to a shoulder injury. As one of the original racers on Tour and 2017 World Champion, clearly we can expect big things from this racer once again in 2023 and beyond. France’s Melanie Lafenetre claimed second and Argentina’s Juliette DuHaime, third, with 2022 Alicante SUP Open sprint champion Alba Frey getting knocked out in the repecharge.

With a stacked line up, nail-biting heats and photo finishes, Costa Blanca has welcomed the APP World Tour into a new season with a bang.

Carolina Cup - 2023 Edition

The Carolina Cup wrapped up over the weekend with the highlight being the Graveyard race, a 13mile race for the elite competitors. Michael Booth edged out Danny Ching for the win in the mens division, with Bodie Von Allmen in third. Candice Appleby just fell short of victory and settled for second place behind Kimberly Barnes who stormed ahead for victory. Tuna Gordilo finished in third.

We will publish more news once we get more information and press releases from the Carolina Cup.
