A pre-paddle SUP warm up routine is so important to performing well on the water.
Beau Nixon takes us through his advanced warm up routine – shining a light on core activation and the loosening of your limbs to prevent injury. This routine is useful for both flat water paddling and SUP surfing, so we hope you can take away some key elements that you will apply to your own warm up.
Interested in spec/shaper of Beau’s boards! Any info available?
Hi! Thanks for asking. This is one of my previous competition boards shaped by Chris Garrett Shapes in Australia. It is 7’6” x 24 3/4” x 4 1/8 ≈ 80L. It’s a tough board to stand on when waiting for waves, but surfs great. I have them shaped without the handle and deck pad to minimise weight. Prefer a rounded pin tail so I can drive turns and have the board hold a little more in better waves.
Thanks for the answer Beau! Nose looks like it still carries a touch of volume but not much at 80 litres! Do you always ride thrusters?
Always try to have foam under my feet and a little toward the nose for paddle power. I definitely prefer thrusters. I experiment a lot with quads still, but find them too loose. However, I occasionally ride a quad with a little trailing knubster fin like Kelly Slater used to have. It works well in smaller conditions and gives me that bite I need for pushing hard on turns.
Great warmUp routine! I’ll do this before my next paddle and I’ll try it on (flat)water, too.
Thx!
Glad you found this warm up routine helpful. Would be great to hear how you get on with it and adapt it to suit you. Thank you!
