Can you SUP surf in a drysuit?! Over the winter months we’ve been wearing a drysuit when wing foiling and been loving staying dry and warm. So it got us thinking… how about wearing a drysuit in the surf?! For Prone surfing a wetsuit has always been the preference because of the way you have to duck dive with your board to get out through the breaking waves. But the way you paddle out over waves makes SUP surfing different and maybe well suited to a drysuit. Yes you’ll definitely stand out in the surfing line up wearing a drysuit! But we were keen to find out whether it was even possible, if it was safe and whether it was something we’d recommend. Reuben goes for his first ever SUP surf session in a drysuit and blogs his experience.

Hi Reuben,
interesting test , as always, I have just a question, how is wearing boots over the socks of a drysuit, and above all do you have the split-toe on your boots ?
Thanks
Franco
Hi Franco, TBH this was the hardest thing to get use to. I don’t usually wear wetsuit boots but you have to with this dry suit because of the built-in socks..You definitely cannot wear split toe boots with these type of dry suits. Maybe this dry suit design is not perfect for Sup surfing but it does show that there is a lot of potential for using dry suits in the future? It was a really interesting and fun test to do.
Hi Reuben,
thanks for your answer, it’s exactely what I expected, what surprised me, instead, was that you don’t use wetsuit boots. In winter, water temperature, by us, is about 8° C ( 46,4 ° F ), I don’t know in England how much it could be, but I don’t think it’s much different. So how can you go barefoot, and come back with all your toes still attached ?
Ha ha. Yes there are a bit cold sometimes. I guess the water temp over most of the winter is around 11° C which i can go without boots no problems. But on cold mornings and snowy days I will use boots. And I also have to say that boots have got so much better in terms of comfort that I will maybe start to where them more. But I do worry about how cold my feet get sometimes. They are never that cold in the water its out of the water walking back to the van, they feel like… Read more »
