As wingfoiling continues to grow around the world, one of the biggest opportunities for the sport is making sure that growth is accessible to everyone. A recent Women Into Wing clinic in Portugal (part of the X-15 Wing class program) is a great example of how that can happen.
Organised as part of the X-15 Class programme, the clinic was designed to encourage and support more women to get involved in wingfoiling through female-led coaching, mentorship and community building. Riders from a range of backgrounds and experience levels came together for a weekend focused on progression, confidence and connection both on and off the water.
While the coaching naturally centred around improving skills and time on the foil, the wider goal was creating an environment where women could learn, ask questions, share experiences and build confidence alongside other female riders.
The initiative aligns closely with the wider vision of the X-15 Class, which has identified female athletes, youth development and emerging nations as key areas of focus for the future growth of the sport. The one-design racing format aims to make wingfoiling more accessible and affordable, while programmes such as Women Into Wing seek to ensure that participation opportunities are available to a broader range of riders.
For many sports, participation isn’t just about equipment or access to coaching. It’s often about seeing people like yourself involved, feeling comfortable in the learning environment and having a supportive community around you. Initiatives like this recognise that reality and are helping create pathways for more women to enter the sport.
As wingfoiling continues to evolve, programmes that focus on inclusion and participation may prove just as important as new equipment and competition formats. The more diverse the community becomes, the stronger and more sustainable the sport will be in the long term.
The Women Into Wing clinic offers a glimpse of what that future could look like.
