Water Skills Academy have created a SUP safety course that all paddlers should complete to become more aware and safe when paddling.
If you are new to stand up paddleboarding or you are experienced and have a quest for knowledge on how to SUP safely, help others, plan your journey and be safe, then the iSUP Smart Course is the best online resource available. The course has been written by the highly experienced training team at the Water Skills Academy (WSA), bringing together relevant subjects throughout the course including great video tutorials.
We spoke to Chris from WSA to get some more information on the course;
With social media being used a lot for questioning we hope that this course will cut through any misinformation and paddlers will take responsibility and be equipped with the knowledge to make good decisions.
Why did WSA create the interactive online iSUP Smart Course?
We knew that there was a need for such a course especially with the increase in people paddling following the initial lockdown.We felt with an online course we could reach more paddlers quicker than face to face and also it allows candidates to rejoin the course to go back through anything they are unsure of. This is especially helpful if paddlers are on the move in a particular environment.
Who will benefit from completing this course?
Complete beginners to experienced paddlers. It covers a great deal of vital information in a variety of environments. If an inland paddler is venturing to the coast for example it provides key information around this environment and vice versa.
If I was to sign up, what can I expect to learn?
Hazard awareness, equipmement, weather and navigation, paddling environments and hazards, launching and recovery, legal considerations, rescues to name a few. It’s very interactive with video tutorials and self check questions at the end of each module.
WSA teach safety courses and first aid skills, along with other courses, do you think safety should be taught to all new SUPers before learning technique? And why is it so important?
Yes without question, although good technique and fitness can certainly help you if you are required to paddle into wind or avoid a hazard for example. We certainly believe that the basics such as being responsible, interpreting weather, leashes, simple rescues etc are key prior to getting on the water. With social media being used a lot for questioning we hope that this course will cut through any misinformation and paddlers will take responsibility and be equipped with the knowledge to make good decisions.
Once purchased and completed you can still log back in to refresh or help with your planning or practice. The iSUP Smart Course costs £45.
WSA are also a full BCorp certified company which means their business practices meets the highest standard of social and environmental impacts. They have a focus on sustainability and also participate in 1% For The Planet.
