What we say

Starboard has branded the Spice a quiver killer, meaning it’s the one board you could own and be content with riding it in a lot of different conditions. We would agree to an extent and would recommend that if you are an intermediate rider who still wants added stability when paddling and a very manoeuvrable board from the tail, then this would be a top choice. However if you are looking for added performance, look at the Pro range and if you are a beginner, check out the Wedge range.
Beau found this board to very smooth and could definitely maximise its performance, however it did feel quite big on the wave. We would highly recommend playing around with the fin configuration to get your desired feel as Beau liked this board as a quad fin set up, which he rarely gets along with. This goes to show that the new design features such as the beveled rails and wing in the tail are working and you need to match your riding style to suit the waves on offer.

Our RCMD rider weight: 85kg
Board weight: 7kg
Tail width: 18cm
Fin set up: Quad + US Fin box
Pros: The stability is great from a performance shaped board. It works in so many conditions and will suit a lot of riders.
Cons: The rails on the Blue Carbon construction are starting to chip from the paddle hitting the side. If you are a beginner, maybe look at the Wedge or other boards from Starboard.
Consider buying if... You are an intermediate SUP surfer and want stability and performance to progress your SUP surfing and feel more confident in bigger or better waves.

What the brand says
“A quiver killer that blends performance and fun in one”
The Spice is an all new wave range that gives you incredible rail carving, impressive speed through sections and instant drive out of turns.
The design brief focused on offering more performance and progression than the Wedge, while being more user-friendly and forgiving than the Pro.
The all wave performance of the Spice allows it to handle a range of conditions, from small beach breaks to overhead point breaks.
From light to heavy, enthusiasts to pros, the Spice range offers a size for all.
Having trouble determining the correct size…6’2″ 93kg. Intermediate +. Thanks in advance!
Hi Craig. As the intermediate + rider, you’re on the limit for the 8’2. I’d say the 8’8 is a safe bet but it’s quite wide at 32″. Have you tried a board with 120L volume before? The 8’2 could well be the right choice, but would be good to try a board similar in volume / size first if you can.
Hi, I’m 70kg. I’m currently surfing a 8’2″x30 135l – would place myself as intermediate.
I was thinking of getting the 7’11”, but I’m concerned it’s too big of a jump down. What do you recommend?
Hi Lu , thanks for your question. What board is it you’ve actually got? The 711 is very stable for its size so it could be a good jump. It will challenge you definitely to start with but at your weight it shouldn’t be too much for you. The other thing to consider is are you selling your current board? Or will you have the ability to still write this in choppier days? It may be worth keeping hold of this board until you get used to the smaller one.
Hey Reuben, it’s a starboard pocket rocket and yea I’ll be keeping it – it was badly damaged from airline handling so can’t sell it on anyway. OK I’ll give it a shot and see how it goes. Thanks!
These boards would work great together… Nice setup
Stability wise, how does it compare to the hipster 7.10? I have the 7.10 hipster, which I can ride easily in clean conditions, thinking of getting something a bit more relaxed for choppy conditions.
Also, not sure about the new blue carbon construction. If you check out the YouTube video, Why you shouldn’t wrap carbon fibre in glass, you understand why, from a material science perspective. Starboard might be better off, just going for S glass construction over E glass? Can understand why they’ve stopped using PVC foam in their carbon composites though from an enviro standpoint.
The Starboard Spice is very stable and during our Quiver Killer test, it was the most stable board we rode. I wouldn’t say the 7’11 is a huge improvement though for choppy conditions, just marginally better. For a more relaxed paddling feel in choppy waves, something slightly wider and longer might be better. Maybe something like the 7’11 x 30″ x 115L Wide Speed from Infinity…
Interesting insights about the carbon construction. Thanks for sharing. Maybe worth a share with Starboard…
