After an action packed April, May had a lot to live up to, but it didn’t disappoint.
Another classic SUP event, the Battle of the Thames hosted by Blue Chip. This was the second round of the UK SUP Clubs series and included a separate race for the Naish One Design series and some ‘mega’ board racing, possibly a first for the UK?
Ryan James took the male 14’ class with SUPboarder’s Peter Kosinski taking the win in the 12’6” class reversing the first and second places from round 1. Top spots for the ladies were again Christine Anderson and Jo Hamilton-Vale. The Red Paddle crew won the mega board race and 34 paddlers contested the Naish Nisco one design race with Alex Tobutt pipping Sam Hymann and Peter Vale to the finish line. On the same weekend paddlers from the UK and Ireland were busy over in Mexico at the 2015 ISA World Championships where the USA won the overall event beating reigning champions Australia. Team GB finished 15th and Ireland 20th out of 27 teams.
The Team GB paddlers results were 10th for Marie Buchanan in the women’s SUP technical race and 10th in the SUP distance race. 21st for Ollie Shilston and 29th for Andy Joyce in the men’s SUP technical race, and Ollie and Andy finished in 25th and 34th in the men’s SUP distance race.
For the surfers Matt Barker finished 25th and Glyn Ovens 37th. And a special mention to Glyn who heroically came in 26th in the men’s Prone course race, taking part in order to gain points for Team GB.
Back in the UK the first of three non-competitive SUPBIKERUN events was held on Exmoor with approx 100 competitors taking part. And there was a first for SUP in Ireland with the first SUP race taking place on the River Liffey in the heart of Dublin. And also the Euro Tour started in Mallorca.
