This is the fastest downwind event in the country. Twenty-six kilometers of perfect uninterrupted wind swells along the Peel Coast from Dawesville Cut to secret Harbour.
It has been rated as one of the best runs in the world by some of the professionals and it certainly did not disappoint us! A straighter course (almost dead-downwind) with smoother runners that made for a more enjoyable race than the Doctor. After Down-winding almost every day in such good company without doubt ensured our techniques had progressed, plus we had been kindly lent a couple of boards more suited to down-winding (the 14’ x 25” Ace, as ridden by double-winner Beau O’Brien).
We both felt we’d really improved our down winding skills during our short time in Perth. Paul, for example, had a time gap of 16 minutes from the winner in the KOTC, while in the Doctor race it had been 33 minutes over a similar distance. My gap from the ladies’ winner Angie Jackson reduced from 36 minutes in the Doctor down to 11 at KOTC. With plenty more room for improvement, leaving us both eager to develop our bump riding skills further and hungry to soak up even more down winding!
Well done Maria and Paul. Sounds like a great trip and some epic conditions. Great write up and interesting to hear about the sup scene in other parts of the world. Catch up soon. Jon and Belinda SuffolkSUP
