Ho’okipa on Maui’s north coast is a windsurfing mecca, but in the morning when the winds are light its all about the surfing. There is a ‘no windsurfing rule’ which is enforced before 11am every day. But after that when the windsurfers are allowed to get on the water things can get a little interesting! Bernd Rorediger is a local hotshot SUPer and windsurfer, and on this particular day thought the wind was too light to sail so he opted for this SUP. Stand Up Paddleboarding with windsurfers at a surf break can make the surf rules interesting sometimes. This is due to the sailors being able to catch and ride a wave in from miles out back and being able to cover a large area down the wave to get in front of broken sections of white water. However it’s all still surfing and the same rules apply. For more information on the surfing rules click here. The questions is – Does this count as wind SUPing?!
