An extremely well designed board that offers great performance in so many different water states. Both constructions are well priced, but look at the Lite Tech board for great value and overall weight.
A wider board in the future will benefit 100kg+ paddlers. Rear tie down points will offer tourers more carrying space if needed.
Buy if... you're looking for a board that has a good level of performance and you're looking to improve and enjoy all types of paddling. A great board to go along side an iSUP!

What the brand says
This 12’6″ x 28″ Generation is the best of 3 worlds; Surfing, Racing and Touring.
It is aimed to be an easy surfing, race and touring paddle board for everybody and anybody.
It will remind you of;
the Longboard when surfing as the tail outline makes it respond with ease,
the All Star when racing in all water conditions,
the Touring when when it comes to stability and user-friendliness.
The Generation is basically the perfect board for a one board quiver. A true high-performance all round paddle board. Available in the lightest and fastest Carbon Top technology and the best value Lite Tech construction.
Good review, i Can only agree. I bought the generation lite tech as my everyday-board. I have a 14×24 allwater raceboard and a 9″ wavesup, and the generation fills the gap. Living in the eastern part of Denmark it is often Windy but only small waves, here i am able to have fun where the two other boards doesn’t really work. I would like to do more downwinding, but it will happen too rarely to justify a downwind specific board, but now a have the generation and I am sure it will do it well. I also like that the… Read more »
Thanks for your feedback Thomas, always welcome.
Great review – so is this an updated Starboard Freeride? Their original hybrid board?? I wholly agree with the versions of size point – wish they produced a generations board that was max 10ft (so it could fit in my shed).
lol yeah it could work in a 10′ too. Yes I guess it is the new board but it fits more disciplines hen the old freeride did. Close, but a different beast really!
This is a great review as usual.
I am surprised that is presented as new shape hybrid stuff when that type of board or boards have been out there with Gong for so many years, but no one seemed to be taken by that concept.
It seems strange that a big brand finally do it and it is revolution and so exiting!
Also, Gong provides different sizes for that type of shape (10.6, 12.6 and 14).
Have a look: https://www.gong-galaxy.com/produit/gong-sup-perv-fsp-2x/
Thanks for you comment Laurent. TBH we have been trying to get boards from Gong for a few years now. But there are not really interested. We are going to doing a Hybrid board test on SUPboarder pro this autumn and we would love to get Gong on that video. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the heads up.
I think all star is to advanced for me. I think generation is perfect board and a good price, but wish that starboard will do a 14’x26”!
How do you think the SIC Maui Sonic 12’6” would compare to the Generation? I think the Generation would be a great board for me (lite tech, torn between 12’6” and 14’), but I can get a Sonic from a shop near me. Prob a bit more stable but slower and worse surfing performance? I’m an intermediate paddler and weigh 80kg. I have a Red Paddle Co Sport and Jimmy Lewis Super Frank surf SUP. I’m looking for a rigid board that’s more performance oriented than my inflatable – mostly for flatwater fun/exercise but want it to be able to… Read more »
Hey Timothy. I got back to a similar question about the Sonic on our YT channel.. Generation has got a much softer nose entry compared to the sonic. This will mean it will handle open water and waves better. The sonic will be easier to paddle in a straight line and may even offer a bit more speed for it length. The generation I feel will be a board that will take you out in more conditions and handle all the rough stuff much better. The sonic will still work really well in flat water conditions for cruising, racing, fitness… Read more »
Super helpful, thanks so much! I think I need to try to get my hands on a 12’6” generation.
Yeah they are great boards and worth the wait.
Thanks for the review guys. I bought my Starboard Generation Carbon Top 12.6×28 after watch your video, on July 17th 2021. After a few days of use I found a crack along both sides of the board. I have summited my warranty claim on 16.08.21 and NO answer from Starboard yet. Pretty disappointed experience after all.

This is not good to hear. but thanks for letting us know.
Did you contact Starboard in you country or on the international site?
Do you have any idea how this cracks have formed?
Paddle knocks, strapping down on a roof rack?
Are they in the same place along the rail to each other?
Thanks Reuben
Thank you for your answer Reuben. Pretty clear a construction feilure. A complete straight crack along both rails in just a few days of use. Claim was well submitted by my Stardboard dealer, who doesn’t received any answer yet. More than 40 days already.

Yeah looks like it could be a warranty.
What country are you in?
I do know that stock level of gear around the world is very low at the moment so they probably wouldn’t be able to replace the board yet. But they should still return your mails. I would suggest emailing Starboard international as well if you haven’t already. Please let us know how you get on. This is very uncommon Starboard usually reply very quickly and have good customer service.
I bougth it online at PureSports Schumacher in Germany, and I live in Spain. They have submmited the warranty claim on 16.08.21, and since that day they are waiting for Starboard evaluation. I’ll keep you guys posted. Thank you very much.
Ok thats good to hear. Im sure it will get sorted but it might take some time in the current market with lack of gear being produced at the moment. I would tape up the rails of the board to stop water getting in and keep using it. I hope it all works out. Reuben
Hi Reuben. Finally dealer and brand solved the claim in the best possible way, considering the current manufactures difficulties by workload, international transport situation and raw materials. They offered me the best achievable option, so happy end after all. Thanks you as well and congrats to all SUPBOARDERMAG team for your work.
This is great to hear. Thanks and happy paddling from the whole team.
