Starboard make very competitive race boards and have some of the fastest racers in the world on their boards. Up until now, racers have had two board shape choices… the Sprint or All Star. These two dug out boards have so many strengths, but when the All Star evolved after 2015 there has been a gap in the range for a less recessed, flat deck board with less bottom shape. And the new Gen R now has all those design features and fills that gap. The Gen R board is going to offer many things for many different racers, from super easy paddling in all conditions to taking on the challenging surf technical racing. The Gen R is certainly a board that does it all and does it well!

What the brand says
“A NEW GENERATION OF RACING”
The Gen-R is a key model for surf racing and all round paddling. The slightly recessed deck has been optimized to have great stability while easy-to-use when beach starting and getting back on the board. Lower rail height and reduced nose thickness is a much requested feature (especially from our lighter riders) for technical races, buoy turning and easy handling in choppy conditions.
The Gen-R is a great fit between the flat water Sprint model and open ocean/all round All Star model. Additionally, youth riders will love this board for its speed and ease of use.
Great review, Would be interesting to see a direct comparison to say the SIC RS and Infinity Blackfish flat deck. I have a dugout blackfish 24.5 but really fancy a wider flat deck for more “relaxed” fitness cruising or rougher conditions racing since my young son has declared my generation belongs to him.
Hey Ben . Yep, this would make a good tests. Your son has got good taste…
Great review, are you still doing a comparison test between the Gen R/ Allstar and Sprint – If so when will it be available?
Hey Neil yes we are, it should be live in a couple weeks. Its takes a long time to ride 3 boards in lots of condition’s ;-).
Ok, that’s great. I did a back to back test between the Allstar 14 x 24.5 and Gen R 14 x 25 on flatwater (small chop) a couple of weeks ago. Before the test I thought I would much prefer the Gen R (I have the 14 x 28 Allstar Airline) but the more time I spent on the Allstar the better it felt, my average speed was similar on both. Hoping your views will help me decide which one to go for 🙂 I am also hoping to test the Ocean One Edge 3 soon as it should compare… Read more »
