A new kind of automatic-release SUP leash has been recognised at one of paddlesports’ biggest industry gatherings — with Lodestone Leashes earning the 2026 Product of the Year award in the Accessories category.
Unveiled at the Paddle Sports Show’s 2026 Product of the Year Awards, organised by KS Event and associated paddlesports media partners, the Lodestone automatic leash impressed judges and paddlers alike with its safety-centric design and magnetic release technology.
Magnetic Safety Meets Everyday Paddling
Unlike traditional SUP leashes that rely on manual quick-release belts, the Lodestone system uses strong permanent magnets in its connector to hold the leash attached during normal paddling, wipeouts and swims — yet automatically releases if the leash becomes entangled or trapped in moving water.
This automatic mechanism provides reliable, repeatable release under entrapment conditions, a key safety enhancement for paddlers who frequent rivers, estuaries or other flowing environments where leash entanglement is a known risk.
Safety, Design & Real-World Benefits
Founder Keith — the innovator behind Lodestone Leashes — explained that the goal was to give SUP paddlers “all the benefits of a leash, but if a leash entrapment occurs a Lodestone Leash releases cleanly and instantly without you needing to do anything.”
The magnetic connection also self-aligns, making intentional detachments (for example when transitioning from river sections or repositioning gear) easier and more intuitive than typical quick-release systems.
Although automatic leashes won’t replace traditional setups for surf or open-ocean downwind runs where other leash behaviours may be preferred, the innovation marks a step forward for safety equipment in the broader SUP world.
A New Safety Standard?
With its 2026 Accessories award now in hand, Lodestone Leashes’ automatic leash is already gaining attention from paddlers seeking smarter safety solutions — particularly on moving water where traditional leash setups have limitations. Availability and specifications are detailed on the brand’s own site, with models tailored for a range of paddling environments.
