In this SUPboarder video, we review one of the most innovative fin designs to date, the Shifter from Quobba Fins. This design allows you to move your rear fin forwards or backwards in FCS or Futures fin boxes.
Quobba Fins originally designed and patented their new surf fin that uses chop stoppers, caudal keels and venting systems to increase speed, hold and drive when surfing. Their design is backed by science, and they do really work.
Now, they have innovated their design to create the Shifter fin which slides back and forth on an adapter to fit FCS and Futures fin boxes. It works the same as US fin box where you can move the fin, but this allows you to move the fin in fixed fin boxes.
Beau tested out the Shifter in some good waves and immediately noticed a difference in manoeuvrability when moving the fin. Moving it forwards gives you greater manoeuvrability and loosens up your surfing. Moving it back stiffens up the board and gives you great stability and hold (great for bigger waves).
You can move the fin without tools in the water giving you the ability to control your hold or manoeuvrability on the very next wave.
Have you ridden the Quobba Shifter Fin before? We’d love to hear your feedback in the comments below.
Hey Beau, can you ask them when they are to bring out a single fin for US box?
I’ll let them know and see if they can make it happen. You can also buy an adapter that fits the US fin box for FCS fins, like this one: https://surffcs.co.uk/products/fcs-longboard-box-adapter
Thanks.
They said a good while back that they were making a 7 inch single fin but nothing seems to have progressed.
I’ve sent an email directly to the team at Quobba and I’ll let you know the update.
Did you get anything back from them Beau?
Yes! Some very exciting works in the pipeline. There is a prototype US Centre fin being produced as we speak and it’s about to go through testing. I’d say another 12months or so before we see the final product, but very exciting.
Yay that is interesting thanks
Hey Beau, I tried some large side Quobbas with a 4.5 centre (usually medium Quobba sides and 7 inch single) on my 9,6 New Deal. It certainly makes noseriding much easier and stable just as you said in a previous vid. The only downside is that the board felt quite sluggish and certainly not as loose. So the trade off for me is if yiu want to make noseriding easier the large sides are the go…but at the expense of losing some speed and slippery feeling, drive and looseness which I prefer with the smaller sides and 7 single. Might… Read more »
Great feedback Steve. The Quobbas definitely have a lot of hold on them so the bigger fins make it harder to get that loose feeling. Glad the fins help with noseriding! I find it amazing that they have such an effect.
Eureka!! Swapped the 4.5 centre fin for a 6 inch centre with the large Quobba sides. I’m amazed at how the Quobbas make getting to the nose so much easier…seems to make the board more stable and the tail sticks in the waves. Great for someone like me who is an average surfer. No idea how the fins make that happen but they are better than a big single fin….and the board still turns great ….just need to put a little more pressure near the rail.
Awesome news! Glad you are enjoying the Quobba fins. Playing around with fins can change the whole feel of your board. Glad you have found a winning combination. Thanks for sharing.
