Starboard Generation 2023
RRP: £1249 , €1559 , $1559
It's still the best! Such a good shape for so many paddlers and their different disciplines.
Pros: The design shapes put onto this board make it so user friendly. It's happy doing everything from cruising, surfing, to taking on downwind runs.
Cons: It's a big board and its overall weight is felt off the water and when paddling up-to top speed.Obviously being a composite board you're going to have to look after it when moving it around and putting it down when off the water.
Consider buying if... you want a board to do it all and haven't got any storage/transport issues. The Generation composite boards are still the best for all types of paddling in all conditions. Heavier to transport and to paddle but the overall performance is worth it!
Starboard Generation Inflatable 2023
RRP: £1099 , €1199 , $1199
This is one iSUP that will do it all... It's most definitely a Generation!
Pros: The boards outline shape, rocker-line and stiffness is perfect. With its fittings and finish being as good as it gets.
Cons: It's not as fast on flat water compared to it's hard brother because of the rocker line. We don't think a towing eye is needed and you will need to keep an eye on your fin boxes if rolling up your board small.
Consider buying if... you're looking for an inflatable board that will happily paddle in all conditions, but 60% of the time you'll be paddling in choppy/open water. If calm flat water is more your thing then look at a Starboard Touring shape instead.
What we say
The Starboard Generation has definitely been one of the best boards to come into the SUP world over the last few years.
Its standout shape does everything well, from riding small bumps to bigger ocean swells, touring or just getting into all round faster paddling. The Generation really is a fantastic shape for a large range of rider abilities, wanting to do it all.
In 2022 Starboard increased the range adding more Generation board sizes. And now in 2023 an inflatable version of the Generation is also available for all those people struggling with storage and transport issues of these bigger boards. In this video we review the new 12’x 30” inflatable Generation, and also compare it to its hard composite brother. Does it perform as well or is it just a stretched all round inflatable board?! Watch to find out!

Great review. Why no double chamber on the inflatable generation ?
I was thinking the same thing when I saw it. But because of it thickness and construction it wasn’t needed.
Do you think the parabolic rails will be used instead of the double chamber on future designs like their DC touring boards ? I think the double chamber is complicated right ?. The surf 9.5 4 inch thick has both cause its thin right ?
Hey Cam, no i think they will use both.
What type of fin box/ fins are on the inflatable Generation Deluxe?
Hi Ashok, they has a US centre box and FCS side fin boxes.
Really informative review – thanks. How would the Inflatable suit a lightweight rider of between 55 to 60KG for mainly open water use?
Hey Ken. Yeah the board will work well in open water conditions. At your weight you could get away with a thinner board, in width and thickness. But TBH there’s isnt many boards out there that have this amazing shape and are narrower and thinner. Does that make sense?
