There’s no better way to learn and improve than watching yourself on video… however good or bad! During this session I set up the camera on the beach and just hit record. And now I’m going to watch it for the first time, and breakdown the session with you. How many waves did I stuff […]

Hi Reuben,
Could you give us your first impressions on this Round Tail version of the Hipster Twin?? The significant differences compared to the swallow tail version?
Hey Ben, someone else asked me the same question the other day. And to be honest I still haven’t come up with a comparison of the two in my memory. It was a long time ago since I’ve use the swallow tail. But I do think the round tail is better it really helps off the top turns. Not that you could see any in this video. And yesterday I had a much faster barrel session, and Im sure the older board would not of handled it self as well. let me think about it some more. Thanks Reuben

Hi mate, well I turned up my nose at surf a little worse than that today, maybe I should have had a paddle.
I like the format of being a whole session, mind you I would not like to see myself surfing as in my dreams when I close my eyes at night after a good surf I see myself surfing the same way Keahi de Aboitiz does.
Seeing yourself on camera is always hard. No matter how much you do it! Thanks for the comment. Happy paddling

I really liked the video, it’s got me thinking I need to spend a bit more time looking at position / line up before getting in. As you said this is more often the conditions we get, would you ever be thinking “I’ll take the long board” or would you always go for something short and snappy?
Hey Gregor, Absolutely I love our Starboard Longboard too. But I do find the longer boards work better when its cleaner with less bump on the waves. The shorter boards I feel do work better when its choppy on the wave face. Yeah always remember to stay focused on your surfing line up when out back.
Enjoyed this video, gives a really good overview of the break and how to make the most of it. You mentioned prone paddling; do you have any tips for quickly popping up straight to standing on smaller boards, under say 8ft or 100l? Do you have paddle in one or both hands?
Great video Reuben, if nothing else it was great for my self confidence to see someone whom I consider a very skilled sup surfer out navigating some conditions familiar to me and still falling or missing the occasional wave as I often do. I usually only try to get 1 nice manoeuvre on the best part of those waves but I see you’re trying to squeeze every bit of length from the wave and work through sections. I should probably be doing that too, hopefully that helps with my terrible wave reading skills. Also sideways floaters are and always will… Read more »
Glad the video helped. When it comes to trying manoeuvres on a wave the important thing is doing the right manoeuvre at the right time. So don’t always find you have to try and do more than one on the wave if the wave doesn’t allow it. This is something I have to constantly try and keep an eye on when I’m surfing so I think not to overdo it and concentrate on doing the right thing at the right time 🙂

Hey Jeff
this video will help https://supboardermag.com/2018/05/19/paddling-prone-on-a-sup-why-when-how-to-video/
and I also jump to my feet as I prone paddle over the wave or bump and grab the paddle with one hand and then get both hands on it ready to brace and paddle.
