After the recent comparison video of the smaller RRD surf SUPs, the COTAN and iWAVE we look at a question that many readers have been asking “When is your SUP too small? In this video we explain what signs you should be looking out for to suggest your board is too small. And that doesn’t […]

Thanks, that is a great little video, just what I needed.
Debating this now – I’m 78 kg, looking at a Jimmy Lewis Super Frank at 7’6″ x 29.5″, 100L, it’s like a JP Surf Wide, just narrower, different outline, etc. I feel like shape makes a big difference (obviously), my primary board is 8’8″ x 29″ @ 112L, no issues at all. I’m just not sure how the fore/aft stability will be on a 7’6″ board, the 8′ version is 115L, which seems like too much volume. Thoughts?
Hey Adam Volume wise, I would say your about right. Good question about the length jump down tho. When you are paddling your board now do you paddle it in slightly offset surf stands? Like the ones we have covered in an old supboarder pro video? https://supboardermag.com/2017/03/22/sup-stance-better-stability-video/ Because if you aren’t I can guarantee you will be using this with small shorter boards. If you can master this technique you will be able to paddle much shorter boards in general. What is the thickness of your board now and the one you want?
I jumped down to the 7’4 #100L, and yes, I do paddle in a offset surf stance. I have no issues at all with this board. It has been great in smallish surf up to chest high (most of the conditions we have on the EC USA). Now – my only concern is, my other board is 8’8″ @29″, 112L, it’s more my step-up board, more rocker for steeper waves. I feel like I could easily step down to something in the 7’11” or 8’0/95-100L range, but……….I’m trying to not buy/trade a SUP every 6 months, ha. I have a… Read more »

Hi, I am 177 cm x 80 kg coming from surfing and on SUP since last March. Now I used in Portugal a RNB 8’5 x 130 L and I already have a board 32″ x 130L which I can handle also with some chop, I paddle in surf stance and I don’t want to sell that board because wave here are often from wind swell short and choppy. I saw a 7’11 x 30″ x 115 L which is a big jump but I would take as 2nd board for better days, it has a good price and I… Read more »
Hey , it sounds like it could be a good jump down. Because of your surfing background it wont be a big jump down in size on a wave. It may take you some flat water sessions to get used to the feel of the board first but it shouldn’t take too long. If the price is right go for it.
I did it. First paddle out with no really flat water pretty tricky, need practice but I am happy to try….and I have a back up solution. I shouldn’t miss waves 😉
