When it comes to booking a surf boat trip to some far off island chain in the search for good swells and empty peaks, it’s sometimes hard to get what you want. But Gareth Grant was lucky enough to score a trip of a lifetime in the Mentaiwis. It goes to show that a solid swell and a good captain and crew are key to making your trip one to remember.
You would hope travelling to the Mentaiwis in June would increase the chance of a good swell, but how lucky were we to get the best swell so far for 2017 !! We booked the Mahoganey – arguably the best boat in the Island chain and a Captain who has a crowd phobia.. His goal is for us to surf alone….
We surfed the name breaks including HT’s, Macaronis and Telescopes and then a bunch of other waves – without crowds. The winds co-operatated, and we surfed 5-6 ft for 10 days.
I rode the NEW Infinity B Line 7”7 – 78 litres… This board paddles in well, is super light and holds it speed through turns… This is Georgio Gomez go to board….
Ke Nalu Wiki 74 is the paddle of choice, it’s the only paddle I have found that doesn’t give me a sore elbow….super light and tough…
