Press release below :
From its introduction around a decade ago, stand up paddling has become a popular recreation across the waterways of Devon and indeed the World. Recreational paddlers are offered limitless possibilities for exploration and Devon offers some of the best, with numerous estuaries and spectacular coastline to explore.
The Head of the Dart SUP Challenge brings together paddlers from both the competitive and recreational sides of the sport with some seeking record-breaking times or podium finishes and others setting the eight mile distance as a challenging goal.
Unlike any other event on the British stand up paddle calendar, the direction of paddling alternates annually: in 2016 paddlers started in Dartmouth and finished in Totnes whereas for 2017 the direction is reversed. Dates are carefully chosen to ensure paddling is always tide assisted!
In 2016 Pete Holliday of Bournemouth took home the men’s title with an event record time of 1 hour 12 minutes, with Ginnie Odetayo of Cornwall fastest lady with a time of 1 hour 23 minutes. A slight tail-wind assisted paddlers in 2016 and most participants will be hoping for similar conditions this year.
£1 per entry will be donated to this year’s chosen charity, the RNLI, who offer a superb service countrywide, not only saving lives but also passing on important safety advice to both mariners and beach-goers.
Event Sponsors of the are leading SUP brands Starboard and Red Paddle Co along with local stockist TriOcean Surf, based near Kingsbridge. Entries sold out in 2016 so it’s important to register early to avoid potential disappointment!
Date: Sunday 2nd April 2017 (start 12.30pm, Totnes)
