SUPboarder gives you an independent review of the 2016 Starboard Hyper Nut 6’10”. A surf stand up paddleboard (SUP) designed for small/med weight riders. But it is also available in many different sizes to suit all weights of riders. An incredibly stable board to surf for its size. Easy, Responsive and Fast are the three words that sum up the Hyper Nut. A board you must have a go on in 2016.
Top review, very informative & well put together. Good to see the take off point which I think is crucial in selecting a board. Question, which is better for the average sup surfer riding 9ft 135ltr, hypernut or surf slate?
Now that’s a question… They are both very good SUPs. The Hyper Nut is slightly easier to paddle on. This is due to it being slightly thicker on the rails at the nose and tail of the board, and also with its wider nose makes it more stable than the JP. We found the JP easier to paddle (Tracking) onto the wave because of its slightly straighter outline. When on the wave, they both have a very similar feel (JP in the 3fin setup). The JP is definitely faster and produces slightly smoother turns but the Starboard is more reactive… Read more »

Just wondering how tall and heavy you are ? What do you mean by more reactive in average surf . How much harder is the jp slate x 26 wide to balance on than hyper nut 6 10 ?
Hey Mick, I’m 5’11” and 75kg before christmas… To answer your questions. 1, What do you mean by more reactive in average surf? – The Hyper Nut worked better than the JP in waves that weren’t as clean. If the waves had bumps or chop on the face then the Starboard was still able to handle it well. This felt like it was due to the rounded wider nose. The JP work better if the wave had a cleaner face. Producing more speed and smooth turns. 2, How much harder is the jp slate x 26 wide to balance on… Read more »

Hi there I was wondering if you have any idea where there is a 6’10 available to demo in the UK? thanks Michael
Hi Michael, There is just the one currently available to demo (the one in the video) based in South Devon. Its our own demo board as Starboard distributor. Where are you based/ who is your local shop? We can potentially organise a demo board going to one of our dealers for you if you are based elsewhere. Best regards – Scott, Starboard Brand Manager

Hi guys and thanks for this very good review !! (Sorry for my english, i’m french : ) i will probably order an hypernut which seems to be an unbeliveable board ! But i wonder, i’m 182lbs and usually surf with a starboard wide point 8.10 32 143l (very nice board to progress !!) I’m now an advanced rider who want to have a more reactive board, i hesitate between the 8.0 31.5 which is 133l and the7.8 30 115l. I am used to have volume and i wonder if 115l would be enought in choppy water… when waves are… Read more »
Hey Julien, Thanks for your question. Sounds like you are looking at the right board volumes. And I can understand your problem. Both boards would be fine volume wise but the bigger board would be easier, obviously. It all really depends on how you find riding smaller boards? The 7’8” will feel a lot more lively and faster on a wave compare to the 8′. You might find that the 8′ is too close to your wide point in size and volume. And you would have wished you went for the smaller 7’8”. It is a very hard question to… Read more »

Hi Reuben and thank you very much for your answer which helps me !! I will probably get the 8.00 as i usually sup in middle conditions. And i really love to take waves earlier !! : ) when waves come bigger, i can use a 6.10 surf egg and maybe soon a shortboard ! Sup for my is really for fun in small and medium waves, and i wonder if with 115 liters i could take off as earlier than with 130 liters. I’ll probably test a naish raptor 116 to test the stability of such volume and make… Read more »

Trying to have a go having trouble finding one round the surf haven of polzeath where the knuckle bragers live ha ha
Definitely seems like a great board to surf for small and medium riders.
