For the past year SUPfit have been working with the UK’s top SUP racer Ryan James to bring a coaching program that works on technique both on and off land, developing paddle skills, teaching effective techniques and providing the latest up to date information in both paddle and fitness.
Ryan James has a pretty impressive CV in both the paddle world and the fitness industry, From professional athlete to full time lecturer. He has a 17 year career deeply embedded in sports science, health, fitness, rehabilitation and nutrition.
To become a faster, stronger and skilled paddleboarder, it’s important to understand how your body moves and functions whilst paddling and how to fuel it appropriately. Over the 2 days the programme looks at Paddle Physiology, including A&P, biomechanics, paddle movement patterns and muscle & joint mechanics, energy systems, energy pathways, intensities and adaptations and Basic Performance Nutrition including training & race hydration and feeding – extremely important for those wanting to get into racing or those who want to race harder.
You will learn how to condition the body appropriately to match your and your clients goals, helping to stay injury free and race ready. Gaining knowledge of adapting paddle training plans including distance training and how to making distance session work, drafting, catch-up, through and off formats as well as looking at paddle periodisation, year round training, goal setting and race day performance, with base, transition, pre-comp and competition phases to ensure the best result possible.
As well as lots of theory to ensure you go away with as much knowledge as possible, a lot of time is spent on the water honing your skills and learning new ones. Time on water will include advanced paddle technique, stroke rate (cadence), positive and negative phase focus, blade size, start and finish sessions, advanced race board skills, drafting, beach starts to flat water starts and what to do at the finish – as well as this their will also be video analysis, ensuring you take away as much from the weekend as possible.
