Welcome to SUP weekly, a round up of the weeks UK SUP goings on, as well as a feel for what’s happening globally!
Firstly, you may have already seen this weeks STUNNING featured image on our Facebook page but, to us it sums up what SUP can be like, so we wanted it in our magazine as well! The picture was taken in the Seychelles, late last year – look out for a SUPboarder feature on the Seychelles coming soon – a brilliant location for SUP exploration, SUP surfing and SUP fishing.
In the UK, we are in the depth of winter and this week have been battered by gale force winds and big swells, whereas last week we saw snow! Bad weather definitely shouldn’t stop you from getting on your SUP as demonstrated in this great video from Darrell Kirk, paddle boarding on the the Great Salt Lake – it’s never too cold to paddle board, even if you have to break the ice! Although the environment looks bleak, it looks incredibly peaceful and strangely inviting to us here at SUPboarder HQ.
Closer to home WeSUP of Falmouth, UK released this fun video of their fun in the snow with Fanatic SUP’s – standard crazy action from the Cornish clan, however we were not too sure about them taking the GOPRO into the toilet…
One of the best things about SUP is that there is something to do, whatever the weather… even if it’s a gale force 10 or it’s freezing cold, you can still do some exploring on your SUP. Keith Wraight sent us this little video of him doing a down winder on his local SUP lake in Birmingham which proves you don’t even have to be near the coast to really get the benefits from paddle boarding! Not sure what down-winding is? Then check out our mini feature and next time it’s blowing a gale, get out there and enjoy one for yourself!
The bleak weather didn’t stop the UK SUP racing last weekend – in fact Bay SUP used the weather to their advantage and ran what is thought to be the first ever UK SUP downwind race. Check out the full UK SUP race review feature here.
Fresh back from their development and testing trips in the Canary Islands, Loco SUP seem to be on the look out for new team riders. Loco are looking for people who will be real ambassadors for the sport and the brand – so why not get in touch. Here is what they have to say;
“I’m looking for some fresh talent to join Loco SUP‘s team of riders and brand ambassadors. We’re particularly interested in traditional short board rippers from a surfing background alongside cross over watermen from windsurfing or kite surfing. We’re also keen to talk to triathlete types about representing our new racing team! If this sounds like you or you know someone suitable get them to inbox me or email some snaps/ video links & bio to: info@loco-sup.com “
Sounds like a great opportunity to us; just check out how great their new line of boards is looking….
Our main feature this week has been of South Wales based sup surfers Abi Barker-Smith and Jim Richardson who will be representing Great Britain in the World Paddleboard championships in Peru next month. We interviewed Jim and Abi and heard about how they are training hard in the Gower, South Wales. The Gower is a beautiful spot for paddle boarding, but not just surf SUP – there are some fantastic flat water paddle expeditions as demonstrated in this brilliant time lapse video!
And finally, if you haven’t already, check out our growing UK SUP forum community, where there are some interesting threads going on. Why not join up and JOIN THE CONVERSATION!
Happy paddling.
