German environmental activist Michael Walther is set to embark on a groundbreaking journey today, September 15, 2025, aiming to become the first European to solo and unsupported stand-up paddleboard (SUP) across the Atlantic Ocean. Departing from Lagos, Portugal, Walther plans to navigate approximately 6,000 kilometers to French Guiana over the next three months, raising awareness for climate change and ocean conservation.
Walther’s specially designed 6-meter (19.7-foot) SUP, a modified ocean rowing boat, is equipped with solar panels, satellite tracking, a foot-steered rudder, and a water desalination system. This vessel will serve as both his transport and survival pod during the expedition. Throughout the journey, Walther will collect marine audio data for the Alfred Wegener Institute, contributing to scientific research on ocean life.
The expedition is supported by Austrian logistics company Gebrüder Weiss, which is managing the transportation of Walther’s custom-built paddleboard. The board was transported overland from Kiel, Germany, to Lagos, and after the crossing, it will be returned to Kiel through a climate-neutral sea freight solution.
Throughout the expedition, Walther’s position will be tracked via satellite, and he will maintain communication with his support team through satellite phone. The public will be able to follow his progress live through the Zero Emissions project website.
This crossing is not only a physical challenge but also a statement on the urgency of climate action. By undertaking this solo journey, Walther aims to inspire individuals to take responsibility for environmental preservation and to highlight the need for sustainable practices.
