Kyle recently paddled around the island of Stromboli in Italy, a 9 mile circumnavigation. He videoed his trip which an incredible insight into how the locals live with an active volcano on the island.
As part of a 4 day trip to the Italian island of Stromboli, an active volcano island, I decide to paddleboard around the island. The distance is roughly 9 miles and takes 5.5 hours, including a 1.5 hour stop in Ginostra, a remote village with less than 40 permanent residents. Once connected by a road from the village of Stromboli, it is now accessible only by boat. The volcano is continuously active, throwing lava, rocks and debris into the air every few minutes accompanied by pretty loud explosions. Although considered minor eruptions, they can be quite startling, especially near Sciara del Fuoco (Stream of Fire) where lava runs and rocks tumble down the steep slopes into the sea. When I first arrive, I don’t see anyone for a while and everything is extremely quiet. I encounter a handful of people, have a conversation with a chatty gentleman before commencing the return trip. The beauty and solitude of the place left an impression on me and I can’t wait to return!
