SecondSurf is the first dedicated online marketplace for buying and selling second-hand watersports kit. It offers the ability to search for kit by location and watersports specific filters. In addition, SecondSurf have committed to donating 25% of all profits to ocean-protecting charities such as Surfers Against Sewage.
SecondSurf was founded by Andy, Niall, Matt and Graham, childhood friends who grew up in Weymouth, Dorset. They all share an enthusiasm for watersports including windsurfing, kitesurfing, and paddle boarding. Like most people, they previously used social media to buy and sell second-hand kit, but found this time consuming and cumbersome. SecondSurf was created as a solution to this.
Unlike any existing alternatives for used kit, SecondSurf are passionate about ocean conservation and sustainability. Sadly, plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues over recent years. Every year approximately 8 million tonnes of plastic waste continue to escape into the oceans from coastal nations (NatGeo).
Encouragingly, we’ve seen leading watersports brands take steps to reduce their environmental impact, although the elephant in the room remains: the kit we use is often made from composite materials that are currently difficult to recycle. SecondSurf want to raise awareness of how individuals can make more sustainable choices. Their platform encourages re-use of the kit already in circulation, and a proportion of each transaction directly contributes to ocean protecting charities, empowering individuals to help drive change. SecondSurf are also supporting small business such as Odyssey Innovation and Pure Oceans which repurpose waste plastics into awesome products like kayaks, sunglasses and phone cases!
Since launching in June 2020, SecondSurf have seen their community grow to almost 5000 members. With tough competition from the corporate giants out there, over £35,000 worth of second-hand kit has been listed on SecondSurf.co.uk – including paddleboards, surfboards, kitesurfing kit and kayaks. SecondSurf was chosen as the official home for UK Slingshot and Ride Engine ex-demo kit. They also stumbled into the limelight when it was featured by Sir David Attenborough’s Instagram account as an inspiring company to follow!
SecondSurf has had an awesome response from individuals, the watersports industry and charities. It’s developing into a unique community that brings these three different groups together to one common aim; to Buy, Sell, and Support our Oceans.
