This beautifully shot video of Benoit Carpentier SUPing around South Africa shows us a few things… It shows how traveling with an iSUP is good, but traveling with a foil and surf SUP too is even better! Yes traveling with all that kit is easier said than done but if you can take it you really will have all the water situations covered! Also, you can see from Benoit’s riding and board choice how different SUP foiling in the surf is to traditional SUP surfing. Filmed from the air and on the same break you can really see his different wave position when foiling. He’s much further away from the critical section of the wave when foiling. There’s no doubt that foils and the styles they create are going to get closer to this critical peak but at the moment the playground for the foil surfers and traditional surfers will stay apart and sharing waves is very much possible if both surfers are competent in the field. Unfortunately (or not!) the gap between these two styles will get smaller and then the tension and feelings in the line up regarding foils and surfing will no doubt change and become more intensified. It’s funny how progression is a good thing, but with a foil under your board its more than just a rider having fun you have to think about. The safety of other surfers is just as important.
