this is a very useful clip, just had a go at some of these drills. Given that the best surfing boards seem to be the most difficult to paddle and stay up on, any more advice or videos on this would be appreciated.

Thanks for an great video. Some of those moves are challenging and I’m spending a lot of time in the water but I’m also getting better balance and skills on my board! Cheers
Thanks for your comment. Yes, there’s some hard moves in there. But if you get them mastered you will really feel the difference in the surf. Glad it’s helping

Hi Reuben Great tips In went today and did 40min on my new 7.5 board and it’s great to get the board mastered. Waiting for you to offer a Sup Surf Camp 🙂
Nice one Ramon, its such a good way to improve. I will let you know about the SUP surf camp. You are not the first person that has asked.;-)

Hi again Reuben, when you train the backside top turn and you throw the paddle to the other side do you pull or just put your paddle into the water and use as a pivot point without pulling? Thx
You can do both. The important thing here is to try and get you into the feeling of rotating your body to help the turn around. On a wave you can place your paddle in the water to bring the rotation of the board and body around. This wont feel the same of flat water because of the speeds involved…. But if you can get you paddle into the water on flat water and pull a very small amount, it shows that you are really committing to the turn. You wont believe how much better your turns will be when… Read more »

And another question 🙂 Just came out of the flat water. It’s really great as you get a really good feedback of your board and feets. So here is what I noticed. When I start to paddle in surf stance my feet are not centered, the front foot is between the centre and the left rail and the back foot between the centre and the right rail. I have tried also the surf stance having the feet centred but maintaining balance is much more difficult as you can not correct left-right balance. Is that correct? So when is the moment… Read more »
Hey Ramon This is a very good question and something I should highlight more maybe in another video. But what you are doing is right. If you are paddling in a surf stance and imagine you are going to paddle for a wave. Your feet will be off set from the centre line. Maybe only very slightly but not right over the centre line. The reason you do this and find it harder to stand right over the centre line of the board is because you cant control the side ways movement of the board. Foot work and board trim… Read more »
Wow, somehow missed this. I love how you related the top turns to the pivot turns. I am now excited for a flat day. Also, I think doing these when it is choppy and offshore will be very helpful — albeit much more difficult. Definitely given me a lot of things to do on days that the mother nature isn’t giving out perfect waves.
