The top turn is a manoeuvre that not only looks good but feels fantastic too. This week we are going to be looking at the frontside top turn, which on a good wave you will be likely to carry out several times on a wave. Performed directly after the bottom turn the top turn is designed to keep you close to the breaking section of the wave where there’s more speed and power.
The top turn can be simple to start learning on a wave, but it takes practice and timing to perfection to nail a good one every time. No top turn is ever the same as it depends on how much the rider commits to the wave and the manoeuvre.
So if you want to make some spray for your friends to see this year, and make the other surfers rubber neck when you’re on a wave, then the top turn is the manoeuvre to master this year!

The other day I saw a good friend of mine doing a great top turn producing also some spray so I asked him and he told me to turn my head to the direction I want to go. I tried it a few times and suddenly I started to spray as well. Until now I was turning my head to the paddle when I used the paddle in the top turn, in fact thats what… Read more »
Hey Ramon, This is something I have tried both ways too. And you are right most riders do look at the paddle. When I surf I always look at the way I want to go but when I SUP surf I look more at the paddle most of the time. I think it comes down to this. If you want to put a load of power in with the paddle, you need to look at the blade to get you shoulders to pull the power into the paddle blade and help the turn. If you want to use more of… Read more »
Great explanation Reuben, many thx. A video would be a great thing. 🙂
It’s really a strange maneuver, we use the paddle on the right (regular) which means turning our shoulders right and at same time turning our lower body to the left. For me that was easier turning my head also to the left.
