THE SUPER MILE – a Guiness world record attempt for the biggest paddle board parade
On Saturday 18th June, one of the most famous sailing and water sport clubs in the UK – the Queen Mary Sailing Club, based in Ashford, Middx – is hosting ‘THE SUPER MILE’, a world record attempt on the biggest paddleboard parade, to paddle just one mile in length.
To break the record, the club has to recruit over 264 paddle boarders and, if successful, the attempt will be registered in the Guinness Book of Records with each participant eligible to apply for an official world record holder certificate.
Matt Forbes, adidas Sailing, Sales and marketing director, said: “We are delighted to be involved with this exciting event as it reaches out to those that want to get out on the water, working as part of a team and to achieve a common aim – nothing less than a world record!”.
Queen Mary’s, club secretary, Tony Bishop, added, “A brand like adidas complements everything we are trying to do here. This is open to all, not just club member, so anyone can get involved in this attempt as training and equipment is all supplied on the day. This is not a personal time trial; instead, it’s about numbers on the water having a great day out and for many, acquiring a new skill. ”
Co-event organisers’ Hampton Court House, a local school, are networking with other schools to help recruitment and in the process the ‘THE SUPER MILE’ attempt will raise funds for the Africa Foundation’s project to build a new science and library facility in South Africa’s Mahlale High School.
Tony Bishop added: “There is an entry fee of just £2 and we are encouraging everyone to set up a Just Giving page and raise money for the Africa Foundation. Anyone raising £10 will be automatically entered into a prize draw for some adidas footwear, while those who raise over £150 will also receive a commemorative T-shirt.”
