Technical Race – Sunday 8 November
We a had grey start to the day2 of the BSUPA Nationals. Drizzle and strong gusty offshore conditions at Carbis Bay the weather forecast a solid 35 knots SW pounding the coast of Cornwall.
Glenn Eldridge set the course, a 4 lap event close to the shore. Total distance of 6k with a short run section. The prone guys were going to start a minute ahead of the SUPs and the whole SUP crew would follow all together.
Ollie Shilston pulled out from the tech due to flu and took over Glenn’s role running the event and starts. Gill was recording times and results. After a 2 minute silence at 11 for remembrance day the race started.
Right from the start there was no holding back. It looked like it was hard to set the pace on the first lap as it was a sprint all the way round. The second lap the packs were forming up and Paul Simmons was ahead of Damo (Damian Warner) and Glenn, and in the women fleet Marie Buchanan was flying. The wind was strong and constantly changing direction which didn’t allow riders to settle in to the course.
You could hear the grunts and see the expressions on riders faces as they ran up the beach between the laps. While they ran helpers would shift their board back to the far end of the start line, ready for the paddlers to get back onto the water. The mens race was between Paul, Glenn and Damo with Charlie (Jones) and Alex (Mullaney) close behind. Paul certainly looked like he was going full pace on the first lap but Glenn reeled him in on Lap two and took over the lead on the 3rd lap to take a hard won and deserved 1st place.
Marie continues to dominate most of her races and despite the best efforts of Ginny Odetayo, who put in a strong performance, Marie took the win.
Every one put in maximum effort. Good to see Jason And Todd Sawyer giving it 110% effort throughout the weekend.
The prone crew made a great addition to this event connecting two sports that work within the ISA team selection for the first time. It was pretty clear from the the start line these guys are super fit and they were fast on the water catching the SUP guys pretty quickly. Charlie Haynes dominated the mens followed by Aidan McGuire. Maia Garner won the womens open tech race followed by Jasmine Mann.
The TEAM GB Selection for the 2016 ISA Worlds will be made once the panel have discussed and confirmed the results and they will posted on the TEAM GB Facebook page.
Thanks to the Carbis Bay team who made this event possible, Glenn and Gill Eldridge from Ocean Sports who with their club members made everyone very welcome and ran a very professional event.
