This week SUPboarder has been inundated with videos of the great waves coming from the Pacific Ocean. First it was Jaws on Maui and now we see a few waves from the much colder, big wave sport ‘Mavericks’ located on the West Coast of America. Just like in Europe it’s winter, cold and grey! Paddling with a thick wetsuit, hood, boots and gloves can make you feel claustrophobic at the best of times, but then add an impact/flotation vest and a 20 foot face and it must feel pretty intimidating!
And as for the SUPer dropping in on the surfer on the second wave! Well, it’s not right but sometimes when surfing in big waves when there are 5 or 6 surfers paddling for 1 wave it can be hard to see who is going to get the drop. They both had a good wave so I’m sure there was a friendly chat and an apology after!

This video below shows a horrific hammering at Mavericks from last years winter season. Just shows you that when you are committed to take the drop there isn’t much you can do apart from go! The surfer on the wave is Jamie Mitchell and he was lucky to make the drop and not get a SUPer on his head as well as lots of white water! Two surfers colliding on a wave is not good at the best of times. But colliding on a 30 footer is potentially fatal. Not to be recommended!
