Downwind SUP foiling has opened up a new way to cover serious distances on the ocean, and in his latest video, UK paddler Jack Galloway documents a marathon-length run along Portugal’s west coast.
Filmed in August 2025 (and, as Jack jokes, finally edited six months later), the video follows a classic route running south from Viana do Castelo to Vila do Conde.
The stretch of coastline is known for long Atlantic fetch and consistent wind swell, creating ideal conditions for linking bumps on foil. The route covers roughly 40 km of exposed coastline, making it a serious endurance downwind run and one that has become a benchmark line for riders exploring Portugal’s growing downwind scene.
Jack notes that while downwind SUP foiling over distances like this is “all time”, the biggest challenge is often the logistics. Organising shuttles, start and finish points, and finding the right wind window can be tricky — particularly in places like the UK.
The video also acts as a guide to the route, showing the start and finish points and sharing the run via Strava and the Downwind Leaderboard.
