The GlaGla Race, legendary for gathering hundreds of paddlers in the heart of winter on Lake Annecy, is evolving for 2026. While the official event takes a "Gap Year" to prepare for a major renewal in 2027, its founder Benoit Mouren has launched the GlaGla Race FreeStyle 2026: a decentralized, connected, and deeply authentic edition.
What is the GlaGla Race?
Founded on the belief that paddling in winter offers a unique sense of serenity and strength, the GlaGla Race has become a global phenomenon. It’s an race where the water is at 4°C, the mountains are snow-capped, and the atmosphere is warmed by the passion of over 800 participants from 20+ countries. It is widely considered the ultimate “Cold Dry” challenge.
The 2026 FreeStyle Concept: “Pirate Mode”
This year, there is no official race village or starting gun. Instead, there is a global call to action. On January 17th and 18th, paddlers are invited to hit the water on their own terms, but in unison.
“We want to celebrate the pure spirit of the sport,” says Benoit Mouren. “It’s about showing that the community is alive, from the Mediterranean to the Baltic Sea, and from the Atlantic to our Alpine lakes.”
The Mechanics: How to Participate
The challenge is open to everyone, everywhere. Participants are invited to choose one of the three iconic GlaGla distances:
- 3 km (Short distance): For those discovering the magic of winter.
- 6.5 km (Intermediate): The classic GlaGla loop.
- 14.5 km (Long distance): The ultimate endurance test in cold water.
The symbolic highlight will be on Saturday, January 17th at 10:30 AM (CET), the exact time the race would have started in Annecy. Paddlers are encouraged to share their journey using the hashtag #GlaGlaFreeStyle.
Safety First: The Golden Rules
Winter paddling is magical, but it requires preparation. The GlaGla Race FreeStyle emphasizes individual responsibility. Participants are reminded of the essential safety kit:
- Thermal protection: A drysuit (like those from our partner Red Paddle Co) or a thick wetsuit.
- Safety gear: A leash is mandatory, and a buoyancy aid is highly recommended.
- The “Never Alone” rule: Always paddle with a partner in cold water.
Looking towards 2027
This “Gap Year” is a transition. The 2027 edition is already being redesigned to focus on SUP Health & Wellness, inclusion, and sustainability. By joining the “GlaGla Race Friends” community today, paddlers are helping to co-build the future of this iconic event.
