Fantastic day of racing for stop 11, the Sparviero SUP Challenge, of the Euro Tour 2023 in Punta Ala, Italy.
*Press Release: EuroTour SUP
Held in memory of Sara D’Apolito and hosted by Punta Ala hostedbynature. In true Italian form the 100+ competitors didn’t shy away from the challenge and everyone signed up for the 15km course around Isolotto dello Sparviero.
For the women’s race, local Cecilia Pampinella absolutely crushed it and won, reminding everyone why she’s one of the worlds finest paddlers. Anna Tschirky had her 8th podium on tour with yet another close 2nd. On a very consisting race, local resident Susak Molinero impressed us for third. The young guard was close with Italian 14yr old phenom Claudia Postiglione who came 4th & only a few minutes behind was 13yr old Sveva Sabato closing the Top 5.
For the men, Michael Booth completely dominated the race and got a well deserved win. On a race from less to more, Donato Freens had a great second leg for second place. The biggest story of the day was Italian Filo Mercuriali that had an impeccable strategy for third on his best international result. Tough break for the early hero of the race Riccardo Rossi who was 2nd for a big part of the race and suffered some tough crumps that relegated to a still very impressive 4th. On a very solid race Itzel Delgado showed why he’s regarded as one of the best South Americans closing the Top 5.
The kids race in the afternoon was wild, with the wind making the conditions super challenging. With everyone in Spartan mode all of them from 8 to 14 years old completed them with a huge smile.
