APP Ride of the Season will serve as the Road to Cascais, with the top contenders earning their place in the Cascais All Stars
The APP is proud to announce not only the launch of the contest period for APP’s Ride of the Season (July 1st – August 31st), but also that beautiful Town of Cascais will play host to what will be an unforgettable All Stars Road trip in Portugal.
#APPrideoftheseason: The Road to Cascais
Entries are now open for both APP athletes and local heroes / weekend warriors alike to submit action clips of single waves from anywhere across the world to be considered for APP’s Ride of the Season. The entry process is simple and free:
- Upload the action clip (of a single wave) to the surfer’s own instagram account, with entry secured by including #apprideoftheseason
- For local heroes and weekend warriors, entry to this division is the same, except that in addition to the hashtag above, entrants should also include #unsponsored to be entered into the correct category
- There is no maximum number of entries surfers can submit
- Performance surfing will determine the winners over the calibre of the wave (it is clear that waves will vary greatly across the world and athletes will be restricted to what they have accessible to them, so the criteria focuses on performance and progression rather than quality of wave)
Shortlist to be determined by instagram likes
A shortlist of submissions will be created by assessing number of likes, so all entrants are incentivized to promote their submission in every way that they can in order to be considered for the shortlist. Guidelines from the APP’s elite panel of Judges and advice from Top Pros will follow @appworldtour and appworldtour.com over the coming days and weeks, as the public will become the judges of this global showdown.
Highlights from standout entries and performances will be showcased each week through the 2 month contest period, as athletes will not be restricted to 25 minute heats and traditional contest parameters, but instead, they will be free to push their limits and strive for the best possible performance to earn their spot in the prestigious Cascais All Stars.
Final Selection Process to decide the Contenders for the Cascais All Stars in October
The final shortlist of athletes will be determined at the close of the contest period (August 31st) and submitted to the APP World Tour’s global judges for consideration and final selection.
The Top 3 Men and Women in the Pro division and the Top Man and Women in the #Unsponsored Division will then earn their place on the prestigious Cascais All Stars, to be held in October in Cascais, Portugal. This will be a trip of a lifetime, and an adventure in progression and performance, as the assembled Contenders will explore Portugal’s wave rich coastline during its golden season in a unique athlete judged showdown to remember (more details to be released over the coming weeks).
Stay tuned to appworldtour.com and @appworldtour as entries start to pour in and highlights are published, as we prepare to witness a new generation of talent and a new wave of entertainment here on the APP World Tour.
APP fast Track entries are now open for both Pro & #Unsponsored athletes in the ultimate quest for speed
The contest period for #APPFastTrack also opens today giving all entrants a 2 month window to submit their fastest speed over a 50m distance, with all counting runs to be verified by GPS reading and video capture.
This competition is open to both Pros and weekend warriors (#unsponsored) alike, with all entrants to be placed into a dynamic leaderboard that will be continuously updated with the fastest times and names to determine who is in the lead at the end of each week.
There are no limits to how many runs you can record and upload, so all participants can keep recording runs until the close of the contest period to ensure that their fastest time possible is included.
Entry Process
Like #APPrideoftheseason, the entry process is simple and free:
- Upload a screenshot of your GPS reading together with the clip of your run to your own instagram account, securing your entry by including #appfasttrack
- For local heroes and weekend warriores, entry to this division is the same, except that in addition to the above hashtag, entrants should also include #unsponsored to be entered into the correct category
- There is no maximum number of entries participants can submit
Highlights and dynamic leaderboard to tell the story
Regular highlights of the fastest runs together with color commentary from the APP’s very own Sports Director, Anthony Vela will be aired on appworldtour.com and @appworldtour and the dynamic leaderboard at appworldtour.com will provide a continually updated picture of who is on top and who is the man or woman to beat!
All Stars Showdown to be announced for the fastest entrants
At the close of competition, the 3 fastest Pro Men and Women and Fastest #Unsponsored Man and Woman will be selected for a prestigous final speed showdown at a venue to be announced. This All Stars event will be a showcase of the fastest racing in the sport as the APP World Tour remains committed to the sport’s progression and creating unique and inclusive experiences for all.
COVID-19 continues to drastically affect the world of sport as the APP World Tour focuses on finishing the year on a high
The APP World Tour has continued to monitor the global situation as it relates to Covid-19 and its widespread impact and has been working closely with its partners to evaluate how best to proceed.
As a global sporting organization, the APP has also been monitoring global travel restrictions closely, as it has become clear that any kind of return to normal for global travel is a fairly long way off.
With travel between the US and Europe complicated for the forseeable future and travel ban for residents leaving Australia likely to stay in effect until the end of the year, if not beyond, it has become clear that crowning a World Champion that all the best in the World can attend and that plays out across a series of events as the APP World Tour does, is not achievable in 2020.
As a result, the APP has focused on delivering two major ‘World Cup’ designated events in 2020, to wrap the year in style, celebrate the sport at every level in two iconic locations and provide the perfect springboard into the 2021 season:
- Gran Canaria Pro-Am (20th – 29th November): featuring the SUP Surfing World Cup in 2020, the European Racing Championships (featuring Surf Sprints and Distance) and the Inflatable SUP World Games
- Paris SUP Open (4th – 6th December): featuring the SUP Racing World Cup for 2020 (Indoor Sprints and Distance on the Seine), as well as the traditional and long standing Nautic Paddle down the River Seine
While it is disappointing not to be able to complete the Tour as planned in 2020, we believe that these two events will provide the best possible solution to what has been a challenging year for sport as a whole. Furthermore, these events, along with our two virtual competitions detailed above will help keep the action and excitement fever pitch, and the entertainment, second to none.
Gran Canaria Pro-Am to bring the World of SUP together after a difficult year, with participation for all and competition to remember
This year’s Gran Canaria Pro-Am will provide the perfect gathering point for the sport after what has been a difficult year for everyone. WIth competition and participation for Surfing and Racing and all ages and abilities, the Gran Canaria Pro-Am will serve as the perfect celebration for the sport in 2020. Here is the low down on what will take place at this year’s Gran Canaria Pro-Am:
SUP Surfing World Cup
The annual gathering of the World’s best SUP Surfers will once again take place at the now renowned hot spot of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, this year under the designation of ‘World Cup‘. After two years of epic surf and after a year on hold due to Covid-19, you can guarantee that the action will be red hot and the competition fiercer than ever. With $25,000 of prize-money at stake, the world will be able to watch the World’s best go blow for blow at one of Europe’s premier destinations from the 20th – 29th November 2020.
In addition to the Professional Showdown, there will also be a) an Open Trials event for aspiring Pros and weekend warriors to step up and be counted, with the top 4 earning their place in the main event and b) the 2020 Youth Championships for SUP Surfing
European Racing Championships
For the first time ever and given that it is anticipated that travel within the European Union should be relatively by this time, the APP will be hosting the first ever APP European Racing Championships in 2020, to be held in the South of Gran Canaria from the 20th – 22nd November.
This event will crown the 2020 European Champions for Men, Women and Youth, awarding $15,000 of prize-money, as well as celebrating Open Age Group divisions, with participation for all.
Inflatable SUP World Games
The Inflatable SUP World Games will be introduced in 2020 to provide a fun and all inclusive event concept for all the family, friends and competitive rivals alike. Wth Individual, Relay and Team formats available for all ages, this event aims to celebrate the fun of the sport, participation and quite simply being involved.
More official event information will be released next week, with entries and packaged travel to Gran Canaria for the Gran Canaria Pro-Am to go live by mid July.
