Big wave surfer, adventurer, stand up paddleboarder, author and motivational speaker Chris Bertish is currently taking on his biggest challenge yet… SUPing across the Atlantic Ocean solo and unsupported. On a purpose built 19 1/2ft craft Chris’s 7500km+ journey is the most extreme open ocean adventure ever on a SUP. It has been attempted before but unsuccessfully, and so Chris hopes to be the first to complete the paddle from Morocco – Canary islands – Caribbean – Florida. Chris will be paddling the equivalent of a marathon every day for 120 days! And he’s not doing it all for him, he’s doing it all for charity and to raise awareness of ocean conservation.
Chris has been at sea for a month now and is making great progress despite already facing some big challenges along the way. We will be updating you on Chris’s paddling progress on SUPboarder, however you can also track his position and follow his Captain Logs via his Facebook page.
Chris’s great motto which captures his attitude to both overcoming struggle and achievement is:
“Dream it, See it, Believe it, Achieve it.” – Chris Bertish.
Why and how exactly is Chris going to paddle the Atlantic you might ask?!! This latest video from one of Chris’s supporting charities ‘Two Oceans Aquarium” gives a great insight into the reasons behind Chris’s epic adventure, as well as him talking about kit, safety, wildlife and his biggest challenge of the trip… mental preparation. To paddle solo for that length of time and over that distance it’s not just about physical fitness, it’s all about the ability to manage yourself in order to succeed. And if anyone is able to do that, it’s Chris!
An extract from Chris’s Captains Log – Ocean Date 3rd Jan 2017
“Don’t take the easy road, ever… Face your challenges head on & your hard work will always be rewarded & you will succeed!
Sometimes you have to go backward in life, in order to move forward.
That’s pretty much what the last couple of days have been about out here on the Atlantic, on the ImpiFish!
……. So suck it up, harden up, focus on the Why, then, “Shut up, get up, stand up, take action, put your head down, go to work, make the change, be the change” and move forward.
Chris is not only hoping to make it into the record books. He is also hoping to make a big change in the world by raising much needed funds and awareness for the charities close to his heart and his home country. Watch the video below and check out Chris’s website to find out why Chris is really paddling across the Atlantic!, how you can get involved and do your part. It’s more than just crossing an ocean.
We’re enjoying following your progress Chris. And wish you calm waters and more tail winds than head winds! Good luck.
