Fanatic team rider Kyron Rathbone definitely went on a SUP surf trip with a difference last year! 28 minute rides, chocolate waves, and crocodiles warning sirens. Not your average SUP adventure! Kyron traveled to remote Borneo in search of one of the longest bore waves in the world. ‘The Benak’ and he wasn’t disappointed.
Fanatic International explain how “Kyron surfed for the first time ever the area between Bakong and Sri Aman. Riding 1-5 feet bore waves for a Tasmanian daredevil like Kyron, who regularly surfs the beasty open water spots like Shipstern and Pedra Blanca, is anything but scary. But Kyron truly got the bore bug, enjoying the brown water rides as much as chocolate candy bars! He became very creative with what you can do on a wave riding such a long time! On day 2, he broke the Benak record with a 28 minutes exhilarating ride at Cadbury Rights only taken down by lightning which literally stroke him down!”
SUPboarder caught up with Kyron to find out more about his epic adventure, and here’s what he had to say. “Its bizarre how the wave comes like clock work, on time every time! On the first day I really didn’t know what to expect, we were waiting on the side of the river when our boatman casually say’s “Its coming.” My heart never beat so fast as we motored the boat toward the wave which was half a km wide and seemed to be moving really fast! The longest wave I caught was 28 minutes but it felt like about 5 hours!!! By the end of each ride you jump back in the boat and motor it to the next section, sometimes the wave completely disappears for up to half an hour before reappearing a few more km’s up river. The river is full of tree branches and sometimes whole trees so you gotta be constantly looking out for those to dodge.”
“Before we rode each day a police boat would cover the whole 42km length of the river and sound loud sirens to scare off the crocodiles. The first two days the siren didn’t work… hahahahahaha.”
“To sum it all up, it really is like being in a dream. An endless perfect little wave that you can just keep playing with till you can’t take it anymore. So surreal and I really can’t wait to do it again!!!!!!”
We wonder what exciting surf SUP adventures Kyrons got planned for 2014? He obviously likes a challenge! Have any of you SUPboarders paddled with crocodiles?!!
